We are mainly a marketing/sales business but have been asked to produce simple sites at competitive prices for clients. We do not build 'flashy' websites just to look good by having fancy graphics etc ... we want sites to be good ... and not annoy the visitors. So, you will see very few 'Flash' intros unless our client specifically requests it, or there is a need for it.
It is fully appreciated that the presentation of a site must be good for the target audience, but there are other considerations too, such as speed and functionality. Recently we visited a competitor site and viewed the example sites of some of their clients .... which took ages as each site was prefaced by a massive Flash file which took a long time to load and run .... and no 'skip' button. When confronted with something they didn't expect to see and which takes ages to load, >90% of customers just head for the fast-exit door. They are looking for a speedy solution to their problem ... not to be forced to sit and view a 'film' first.
We can't always produce exactly what we want ... our customer's choices (particularly colours, logos etc) sometimes mean that we have to go against our own principles, but what we try to do is to put together:
simple sites
which load quickly (not always possible!)
are easy to navigate
provide essential information
aren't confusing
Again, in the course of altering existing sites it is not always possible to achieve our aim in the short term, but once the site is completed it should work fast and well, subject to our client's requirements.
